What Is Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls?

Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls is a natural wonder on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. The formation is created by an ancient volcanic plug and the falls pour over the edge of the cliffs into the sea below. The water falls 55m from the cliff top to the sea.

Kilt Rock is named for its resemblance to a traditional Scottish kilt and volcanic activity is the reason for this unusual rock formation. The falls get their name from the Gaelic word for ‘meal’, which refers to the grinding noise made by the water as it cascades over the rocks.

Visitors can enjoy stunning views of the coast from the top of Kilt Rock, and there are also a number of easy walking trails that lead to Mealt Falls.

An extra thing you can also see whilst you’re here is a fossilised dinosaur footprint!
