The salt mine dates back to prehistoric times and was in operation until the early 20th century when it was repurposed into an amusement park. The site is now a major tourist attraction and includes a range of attractions such as underground lakes, slides, Ferris wheels, mini golf courses and more.

What started as a salt mine is now one of the largest tourist attractions in the country and receives over 500,000 visitors per year and includes the extremely unique world’s only underground theme park.

The mine is 112 metres (367 ft) deep and 67 metres (220 ft) wide at the base, so it is absolutely huge and the salt content in the salt mines could fulfil the salt requirements of the entire planet for the next 60 years!

The Salina Turda Salt Mine has a long history, dating back to the Roman times when it was first used as a salt source. Since then, the mine has undergone several changes and expansions, with the most recent one being completed in 2016.

The first official mention of the salt mines dates back to 1271 when it was spoken about in a document issued by the Hungarian chancellery.
