What is an awning storm strap and why are they important?

Many campervans and motorhomes come with awning overhangs for a little bit of coverage when you step outside. It’s very common for these awnings to be a canvas that is made from either cotton or polyester. While they are great for giving you shelter, awnings need a bit of support when it gets windy.

An awning strap can be used to secure the awning in place, so it doesn’t move around or out of place when the winds get high. During a storm, your awning is less resistant to wind. However, with the use of an awning storm strap, it will stay firmly secured and in position. This is one less thing you have to worry about when a storm hits.

Storm Kit- Awning Storm Tie Down Strap Kit

Storm Kit knows that customers don’t need a lot of bells and whistles when it comes to storm straps. They simply want a strong set of storm straps that they can rely on when the weather gets rough.

  • Comes with 3 incredibly strong awning storm straps that are each 3 meters long
  • Each strap has a D ring to make it easier to attach to the awning
  • Also come with hooks and clamps for adjustments.
  • Also comes with 3 heavy-duty pegs that are 15 inches.

While these are very sturdy and reliable storm straps, many customers have mentioned that the kit doesn’t include instructions.

PLS- Motorhome Awning Tie Down Kit

PLS makes a great awning storm strap kit for temporary use when a storm hits. This kit is designed for awnings that are up to 7.5 meters in height. As long as your awning is not taller than that, you will likely have good luck with these storm straps.

  • Comes with one long strap, making it easier to tie down the awning when it gets windy
  • Great value for the money
  • Comes with a reflective strip, making it easier to locate in the dark

One downfall about using this strap is that if it isn’t secured properly, it may keep you up all night. This is because the wind will be able to get underneath it and cause the strap to bang on the awning, making a lot of noise.

Fiamma- Awning Tie Down

Fiamma is another great brand to pay attention to when you need reliable awning storm straps. This awning ties down set comes with all the necessities for keeping your awning in position. Each set comes with two yellow awning storm straps to make it easier to spot them. This set also includes:

  • 2 stakes
  • 2 springs
  • 2 frontal hooks

This kit has proven to be popular for Fiamma users because it’s very easy to use. The straps are nice and long, making it easy to work with on nearly any camper or motorhome. They are also very easy to connect properly to the awning so everything will stay in place.

However, one issue that some people have run into using this storm strap set is that the clips can break easily if not used properly. To prevent this from happening, always adjust the strap first so it is at the correct length before using the clip. If you add the clip too soon, it is likely to snap.

Final thoughts- Best awning storm straps of 2022

Before you start mapping out your cross-country trip this season, we strongly recommend that your campervan or motorhome is fully prepared. One thing you don’t want to risk is getting caught travelling in a storm unprepared. If you have everything you need for a safe trip, then you don’t have to worry about what could go wrong. One item you don’t want to miss is a set of storm straps.

Awning storms straps are essential for keeping your awning in place on a windy night. The three storm strap sets that we mentioned in this article have exceeded travellers’ expectations when it came to keeping their awnings in place throughout the storm.

I love everything about travel, from seeing new places, learning about new cultures and trying new foods! I believe that travel is one of the best forms of education you can get, I have learnt so much about myself and about the world from travelling all over. Travel is something I feel so passionately about, and I love the fact that we are now lucky enough to have this opportunity to do what we love as much as we can, it’s a dream come true.

Before we started travelling, I worked in local government in administration. I had been in this job for several years and had reached a complete brick wall where I was so fed up, but didn’t know what else to do. The only thing I knew that I wanted to do was to travel, and had wanted to do that for many years.

There were hundreds and hundreds of places on my wishlist that I wanted to go to, and I knew that going on a weeks holiday maybe twice a year if we were lucky wasn’t going to cut it.

After being in lockdown due to the Covid pandemic, and working from home staring at the same 4 walls every day, 2021 seemed like the perfect time for us to take the risk to finally do what we had dreamed of for so long.

It was a hard decision to completely change our lives, but so far it has been the best decision we have ever made!
